On October 26, 2025, the 2nd Global Journalism Symposium convened at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Shenzhen University. The event was hosted by SMC and co-organized by the Qianhai Academy of lntemational Communicationand the Shenzhen Urban Communication lnnovation Research Center. More than 30 experts and scholars from leading institutions, such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Communication University otChina, gathered to discuss emerging trends, theoretical innovations, and future directions in global jouralism and internationalcommunication research.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Naipeng Chao, Vice President of Shenzhen University, extended a warm welcome to all attendees. He noted that the symposium aligns with China’s strategic priorities in strengthening international communication capacity and reflects Shenzhen Universitys ongoing commitment to advancing high-quality development in the humanities and social sciences.

Professor Guang Yang, Acting Dean of SMC, also addressed the audience. She outlined SMC’s development strategy driven by mainstreaming, digitalization, and internationalization” and highlighted the Schools efforts in building a comprehensive system for global communication research and talent cultivation. She expressed her hope that the symposium would continue to grow into an influential academic platform for exchanging ideas, exploring disciplinary frontiers, and supporting the development of outstanding young scholars.

In the keynote session, Professor Yuezhi Zhao of Tsinghua University, Dr. Weijia Wang of Peking University, and Professor Deqiang Ji of the Communication University of China offered forward-looking insights into global journalism and international communication. Their talks collectively called for research approaches grounded in Chinese experience, informed by Global South perspective, and attentive to evolving networks and global connectivity. Professor Xin Yu from Shenzhen University presented preliminary findings from a large-scale cross-national survey on global news use, trust, and technology adoption. Responding to the keynote presentations, Ruisheng Liu, Associate Editor of Journalism & Communication Studies, underscored the need to integrate rigorous empirical evidence with conceptual innovation in order to build an autonomous and internationally visible knowledge system.

The symposium featured four panel sessions in which nearly 20 young scholars from universities across China shared their latest research on key issues in global journalism and international communication. Editors and representatives from leading academic journals—including Journalism Research, Journalism & Mass Communication, Global Journal of Media Studies, China Publishing Journal, and Youth Journalist—engaged in substantive discussions and offered detailed feedback, fostering an open and constructive academic exchange that enriched the intellectual depth of the event.
