On August 26, 2025, the School of Media and Communication (SMC) at Shenzhen University welcomed scholars from across China and Hong Kong for the inaugural Workshop on Intelligent and Computational Communication. Organized by the Intelligence & Computational Communication Research Association, and co-hosted by SMC, the Laboratory of Intelligent Communication and Digital Social Governance at Shenzhen University, and the Center for Computational and Intelligent Communication at Fudan University, the event also formed part of SMCs 40th-anniversary celebrations of its journalism and communication discipline.

Under the theme “Theorizing Intelligent and Computational Communication,” the workshop examined how emerging computational methods can be integrated with communication theory, and how these approaches may reshape the field. More than 30 distinguished scholars from institutions including City University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Normal University, and Shenzhen University participated.

The opening ceremony was moderated by Professor Guang Yang, Acting Dean of the SMC. The ceremony featured remarks by Professor Naipeng Chao, Vice President of Shenzhen University, who highlighted the university’s pioneering achievements in computational communication research and emphasized the role of this work in driving digital-society development. Professor Baohua Zhou, Associate Dean of the School of Journalism of Fudan University, outlined the committees vision for building an academic community around this emerging field.

Designed as a small, focused, and dialogue-driven forum, the workshop encouraged lively exchange among presenters, discussants, and attendees. By fostering theoretical innovation and building stronger academic networks, the event laid the groundwork for future collaborations in intelligent and computational communication.
