On October 17, 2024, Professor Matt Walsh, Head of the School of Journalism, Media, and Culture at Cardiff University, accompanied by Student Recruitment Manager Sarah Sherrington and China Partnership Manager Xingfei Liu, visited the School of Media and Communication (SMC) at Shenzhen University. This visit sparked exciting academic activities and inspiring discussions, advancing the implementation of the 1+1+1 joint master’s program and strengthening the partnership between the two schools.
Professor Walsh delivered an engaging talk titled “Generative AI: Balancing Ethics and Disruption in UK Newsrooms.” He highlighted both the advantages of generative AI in journalistic practices and the ethical challenges it poses, such as gender bias and fairness issues. Walsh emphasized that finding the right balance between the benefits and risks of AI in newsrooms is crucial for building a sustainable human-AI relationship. Students and faculty were deeply engaged, raising questions such as “Who should take responsibility for AI’s mistakes in journalism?” The vibrant Q&A session reflected their enthusiasm and curiosity, leaving everyone with new perspectives on the future of AI in media.
Following the talk, Student Recruitment Manager Sarah Sherrington and China Partnership Manager Xingfei Liu gave a detailed presentation on the 1+1+1 joint master’s program between Shenzhen University and Cardiff University. The session provided students with a clearer understanding of the program’s unique offerings, helping them envision future academic and career possibilities.
After the presentation, the Cardiff University delegation discussed with the staff of SMC over opportunities for further collaboration. Attendees included Dean Naipeng Chao, Associate Dean Guang Yang, International Affairs Secretary Xing Zhang, and Assistant Professor Rukun Zhang.
