On May 27, 2025, the School of Media and Communication hosted an engaging academic lecture titled Reinventing Professionalism: The Practical Foundations and Value Reconstruction in Journalism and Communication Studies. The keynote speaker was Professor Yong Zhou, a renowned scholar and Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China. The event attracted a diverse audience of faculty and students.

In his lecture, Professor Zhou delved into three fundamental questions: What is professionalism? Does it still hold value? And how can it serve as a foundation for redefining the value of journalism and communication studies?

Professor Zhou opened his lecture by suggesting that the origins of journalistic professionalism are rooted in practical, real-world contextscontexts that remain central to the disciplines ongoing value. Drawing on examples from mainstream media, he argued that professionalism still holds relevance today. Domestically, it supports the role of journalism in public governance and social stability; internationally, it underpins efforts to shape global narratives and strengthen Chinas voice on the world stage. He also introduced the concept of new professionalism, which prioritizes holistic truth and constructive reporting. In his view, the field must reassert its professional core by aligning with broader societal needs while maintaining journalistic integrity and relevance.

The lecture resonated with attendees, sparking thoughtful reflection and discussion. Many students and faculty praised the talk for offering clear perspectives on the evolving value of journalism and communication in an increasingly complex media landscape. It provided not only intellectual inspiration but also a concrete direction for future disciplinary development.
